Grant Writing: 5 Ways To Establish Community Partners

Hey friends,

This is a crucial area of grant writing that some people forget to prepare for when it is time to write the grant. However, this does not have to be your story. We are sure that you are making great partnerships every day! If you're not, it is never too late to begin. Here are a few steps to get you started on your way, establishing partners who believe in your cause. You can also begin to help some of them with your cause!

  1. Connect with leaders at partner organizations to promote engagement - genuinely consider how you can serve them and their goals. Don't just look at the partnership for your and your organization's gain. The worst thing a nonprofit can do is partner on paper but not truly partner with each other in the community.

  2. Define and prioritize goals - take time to talk about the goals and see how you can bring those goals to a reality to serve the set population.

  3. Build new partner relationships and strengthen long-standing ones - a simple phone call or email goes a long way. The strength of beginning a nonprofit leader is that we can learn from other leaders. Take time to enjoy a coffee with another leader or lunch. You can even visit them at their nonprofit to try and strengthen your bonds for success.

  4. Ensure screening and referral protocols are seamless - I know sometimes you get tired of the meetings, but it is necessary that as you build your partnerships, each party understands the role they play in the program. It is nothing worse than having a client confused about your process. And it is even worse when funders are unsure about who handles what aspect of the program.

Before you make the partnership consider the compatibility of the purpose and goals of the partnering organizations, the value- added by partnering, and expectations around each organization's participation. Make these clear in the partnership, and examine how each organization defines the partnership.
