Grant Writing: Passion Vs Need

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

We know you are incredibly passionate about your cause and feel it will significantly help the community. But please, before writing your grant and working on your motivation, take a moment to do a needs assessment. A needs assessment enables you to identify gaps within your community, and it should clearly and concisely demonstrate that a relevant problem or need exists. Identifying gaps will assist your organization with your specific program. Your needs assessment will be used for each grant that you write in the future.

Here are a few questions and or steps you can take to begin with your needs assessment:

  1. What is the problem in my community?

  2. Am I addressing an evident knowledge or need gap?

  3. What sets my project apart from the rest?

  4. What population do I want to work with in my community?

  5. Who in my community is currently working with my desired population?

  6. Is my data relevant and concise?

  7. Are my references and data well documented?
